What Everyone Should Know About The UK Motability Scheme
Founded way back in 1977, the United Kingdom based Motability scheme has now provided over 2 million cars, scooters and powered wheelchairs for disabled people. Through the scheme people can use their government funded mobility allowances to purchase the vehicle that they need.
The UK disability living allowance is paid in order to cover additional living costs. This special allowance is divided into two parts to cover the cost of care and mobility. The mobility allowance is paid at two rates, lower and higher. The motability scheme is suitable for anyone receiving the higher rate mobility allowance, as well as people receiving War Pensioners mobility supplement.
The scheme enables people to exchange their higher rate mobility allowance for the vehicle of their choice. This fantastic scheme has enabled many disabled people to do things that would have otherwise been very difficult or even impossible, opening up the doors of possibility. Improving mobility has brought many opportunities to peoples lives that would have previously been impossible such as voluntary work, study and employment.
Today there is a great range of considerately adapted disabled vehicles ideal for many people and their families. A very popular vehicle is the Renault Kangoo which is ideal for rear wheelchair access modification. This popular model of vehicle is readily adaptable to a variety of needs and will carry a driver, a wheelchair user and up to 3 passengers in comfort.
Another popular vehicle is the Peugeot Partner Tepee. This practical and compact MPV has received praise for its handling and comfort. They are excellent, adaptable cars that can readily accommodate a rear wheelchair access ramp.
Many vehicles can be adapted to allow a wheelchair to take the place of the driver’s seat enabling complete freedom and no need for assistance.
The Motability scheme has been a fantastic success which the founder, the late Lord Goodman, described as “the most successful achievement of my career and the most fortunate thought that ever came into my head”.
