Years ago, as a young man, I loved working on my car. Granted most of the ‘work’ that I did was changing the oil, filters and wiper blades, and of course cleaning it. I wasn’t capable of doing more advanced work like replacing brake pads or a head gasket, although I did replace a starter once. All of the more advanced repairs were done by the local auto mechanic. As a youth I drove used cars so there was no warranty or warranty-covered repairs and dealership based repair shops aren’t very friendly to eight year old cars. These days I don’t do any work to my cars.

We all reach a point where such things as working on or cleaning your car lose their appeal and actually become a drudgery. When the car needs to be cleaned, I take it to the car wash. Since I lease my cars, when something goes wrong with the car mechanically, I take it straight to the dealer. Most repairs are covered under the automobile warranty. When it comes to oil changes, while I could certainly get under the hood and do it myself in less than 20 minutes, why should I. The quick lube chain does a great job at a great price and I get a coupon for a car wash.

There are several national and regional brands of quick lube type places so it really doesn’t matter which one you go to. They are all staffed by trained technicians equipped with Snap-on tool boxes full of wrenches and tools that they need. Beyond that, this is a professional auto lube shop with hydraulic lifts and other specialized equipment. I mean when was the last time you went to someone’s house and found a pneumatic torque wrench in the garage.

Another benefit is that you do not need to recycle your own used oil which is the law. The quick lubes all have large holding tanks that collect all of the old oil. This oil is then picked up by a tanker truck and moved to a recycling station. If you change your own oil, you need to collect the used oil and bring it to a service station or other collection point. Avoid this hassle and get piece of mind knowing that you are doing the right thing for the environment by letting the professionals properly dispose of the oil.

All this convenience for roughly twenty five dollars. If you had to go out to the auto parts store and buy the oil and the filter I’d bet it would cost around fifteen to twenty dollars, so what are you really saving. Try to avoid peak times on the weekends when the lines can get real long.
